Starlink Taps Qualcomm for Its 5G Ground Network
SpaceX has selected Qualcomm technology for Starlink Mobile’s planned U.S. terrestrial 5G network. Deployment is slated to begin in 2027 under a multiyear agreement.

The actual story.
SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile is adding muscle on the ground. Qualcomm’s November 4 announcement says SpaceX selected its Dragonwing QRU100 and QDU100 platforms, plus Layer 1 software, for a planned nationwide terrestrial 5G network.
Deployment is expected to start in 2027. The multiyear agreement covers tens of thousands of sites; that timetable does not promise a finished nationwide network next year.

Qualcomm’s technology handles radio and baseband processing. It is infrastructure for ground-based cellular service, part of Starlink’s ambition to combine terrestrial and satellite connectivity.
A separate 800 MHz spectrum agreement would have SpaceX acquire Grain Management’s nationwide portfolio. Grain’s October 8 announcement said the transaction was subject to FCC approval and other closing conditions.
Pairing ground infrastructure with satellites could give Starlink a stronger way to challenge existing mobile networks. The test now is delivery: bringing sites online, integrating the network and turning coverage promises into dependable service. Watch rollout milestones and regulatory approvals before treating the announcement as a reason to change providers.
