Anthropic Opens a Paid Path Into AI Research

Anthropic is accepting residency applications from established technical leaders who want to move into full-time AI research. The paid placements run for six weeks, three months or six months, with mentorship and access to frontier models and compute. Prior machine-learning experience, a PhD and published papers are not required. Applications close November 22, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific.

The actual story.

Anthropic’s research residency is opening a route into empirical AI research for people who have already led ambitious technical work. This round targets established leaders such as quantitative-discipline professors, technical founders and staff-level engineers who want to make the transition full-time.

Applicants do not need previous machine-learning experience, a PhD or published papers. The program instead emphasizes evidence of technical achievement, strong implementation and communication skills, collaborative work and motivation to improve AI safety.

Each resident is paired with an Anthropic mentor, given access to frontier models and a dedicated compute budget, and matched with a project suited to their background and interests. Possible research areas include interpretability, safeguards, safety evaluations and stress testing model capabilities.

Placements require a full-time commitment and generally last six weeks, three months or six months. Flexible start dates are an aim rather than a single announced cohort date.

The US application lists pay of $350,000–$500,000 annualized, plus benefits. The UK application lists £265,000–£375,000 annualized. Both rates are prorated for the actual residency; they are not the total payment for a short placement.

Applications close November 22, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. Anthropic expects to make offers in January 2027. It prefers San Francisco participation but allows some remote arrangements, subject to employment eligibility and program requirements. Applicants should check the relevant listing rather than assume the role is remote from anywhere.

For an experienced builder considering the move, the practical question is whether they can commit fully to a research project and show how their existing expertise would help. The placement offers time inside a frontier AI lab to explore that transition; a permanent job is not guaranteed.

THE TAKEAWAY

The residency gives experienced technical leaders a paid way to test a move into AI research, with mentorship and access to the tools used inside a frontier lab. The useful application case is what you have built, how you solve hard problems and why your expertise matters for AI safety. Check the full-time commitment and location terms before applying by November 22.
