The actual story.

Canva is moving further into building the AI behind its design tools. On October 22, it introduced Craft, its first image foundation model built and trained from scratch by Canva Research.

Craft generates images at up to 2K resolution and is available through Dream Lab and Canva’s API. Rather than render directly from a prompt, its architecture first plans the composition, including objects, placement and text, before a separate model renders the image.

Canva says Craft debuted fourth among image-generation models on DesignArena and placed Canva Research second among image-generation labs on that platform. Those are attributed leaderboard claims, not a universal verdict on quality or an independent MDN test.

The strategic significance is Canva competing as a model developer, not simply offering another interface for image generation. Its design-focused training and existing creative workflow give it a distinct approach to that competition.

Canva also announced faster variants and additional capabilities as forthcoming. The announcement does not establish that Craft beats every rival on every task; it establishes that Canva is putting its own model into the race.

THE TAKEAWAY

Canva is entering image-model competition with its own foundation model, using composition planning as its design-focused differentiator.

Receipts, not rumors.
