ChatGPT Pro Adds Matching API Credits. Here’s What $500 Buys Over $200.
The new API-credit benefit changes the comparison between two existing Pro tiers. The $500 option adds more credits and Ultrafast access—but the value depends on what you actually use.

The actual story.
OpenAI added monthly API credits for eligible ChatGPT subscribers on October 28, 2026. The $200 Pro tier can claim $200 in credits; the $500 tier can claim $500. The $500 plan itself is not new: OpenAI’s September 29 DevDay documentation already listed it, and the $200 option remains available.
For self-serve subscribers, Pro $500 also unlocks Ultrafast in ChatGPT Work and Codex for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. Eligible Enterprise and Edu plans can also access it. OpenAI says Astra can generate tokens—the pieces of text a model produces—up to eight times faster than Standard mode in Codex. That is not a promise that an entire task finishes eight times sooner, or that faster output produces better answers.
Speed spends the allowance faster too. Ultrafast consumes included subscription usage at eight times the Standard rate and purchased credits at six times the rate. Paying 2.5 times the subscription price does not establish a 2.5-times usage allowance. The API-credit grant is a separate benefit, not an expansion of ChatGPT or signed-in Codex limits; Codex usage through API keys is excluded from that benefit as well.
Activation requires linking an API organization you own, using the same email address as your ChatGPT account. Your paid subscription must be at least seven days old. The first grant is prorated for the remaining billing cycle, and unused credits expire at that cycle’s end without rolling over. Renewal grants continue only while the benefit remains available and the subscription qualifies.
The useful comparison is the extra $300 per month. If you already use the $200 grant and would otherwise pay for at least another $300 of eligible API usage each full billing cycle, the larger grant could offset the subscription premium while the benefit lasts. If those credits go unused, they do not save you money. Ultrafast then has to justify its cost through the value of reduced waiting, with its faster consumption of usage included in the calculation.
The $500 tier can make financial sense for someone already consuming the extra $300 in eligible API usage. Unused credits are not savings, and faster token generation is not a promise of better answers.
